The Pacenti estate was established in 1970, with the purchase of the property north of Montalcino (Pelagrilli) by Siro, who then proceeded to plant some important vineyards, which are still there today, in the fresh, clay soils of the land overlooking Siena. In 1988, management passed into the hands of Giancarlo. This was the year of the harvest in which Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino Siro Pacenti were bottled for the first time.

At the beginning of the Nineties, the estate expanded to include land south of Montalcino (Piancornello).

Here, in soils rich in minerals, at the end of the Sixties Giancarlo’s maternal grandfather had planted five hectares of vineyard which were to prove particularly important in determining the characteristics of Siro Pacenti wines. This is now where the Sangiovese rootings used in the estate’s new plantations are reproduced. The Nineties were also marked by the start of the partnership with the University of Bordeaux and the first experiments on phenolic maturity applied to Sangiovese (Yves Glories). The new cellar was built between 2001 and 2004, combining technology and experience with respect for the grapes and the land.

The quality of Sangiovese wine can be notoriously variable. But in the 1980s, drastically improved winemaking techniques saw a significant shift toward more quality-oriented releases. At the dawn of the 21st Century, Sangiovese equated to roughly one in every ten vines on the Italian peninsula. Partly due to clonal variation it has many synonyms in its native land (see below).

Sangiovese tasting note

Good-quality Sangiovese is generally prized for its acid structure and firm tannins. Savory flavors of dark cherries and black stone fruit are characteristic and may be backed by secondary notes of tomato leaf and dried herbs. The judicious use of oak coaxes richer flavors from the grapes, tending toward plum and wild raspberry.

More Information

If you’ve enjoyed our past offerings of richer-style complex Italian Reds such as Amaranta and Masso Antico then you really need to look at this. We’ve recently acquired a small allocation of the 2020 Cielo e Terra 3 Passo Vino Rosso . This Venetian Blend is predominantly Negroamaro with Sangiovese and it has rocked the socks off Italy’s most well-known wine writer Luca Maroni:

Among the best reds of the year, chapeau.” 98 Points, Luca Maroni, Annual Italian Wine Guide

But I should also add this is not some kind of one-off fluke, the previous vintages of this wine has won many golds medals and wine scribes have also sung it’s praises. Basically, we have been itching ourselves wanting to sell this wine to you and finally we have enough stocks of this wine to last, well maybe a day!

The Moscato, Muscat in France or Moscadel in Spain and Portugal, is an aromatic grape found in almost all the Italian peninsula and it is one of the most cultivated grapes in the world and Italy produces more Moscato than any other country, mainly as Moscato d’Asti, made from Moscato Bianco and it has many synonyms and appellations, the main ones are Moscadello di Montalcino, Moscato di Canelli, Moscato di Trani, Moscato d’Asti.

The Moscato belongs to the Moscati family of grapes, aromatic varieties whose name derives from “muscum”, moss in latin, whose characteristic aroma is found in the grapes . Other branches of the family worth mentioning are Moscato di Alessandria, known for its light and fruity white wines. Moscato Ottonel is pale and ripens early, while the Moscato d’Amburgo is a black grape variety and is often used as a table grape. Finally, the Moscato Giallo and Moscato Rosa (yellow and pink) both from northern Italy, are used to make a range of sweet and dry wines. As a general rule, Moscato prefers warm climates and prospers in the Mediterranean climate. Moscato has a distinctive aroma, but its versatility makes it an attractive option for winemakers. Moscato wines can be dry, medium, sweet, sparkling or even dessert wine.

Prosecco is a sparkling wine from north-eastern Italy, specifically the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine regions. It is also the informal name for the grape variety used to make these wines, which is now known officially as Glera. Until 2020 the designation applied only to white wine, but Prosecco Rosé was introduced in 2020.

Italian Prosecco was once a broad category of sweet fizz, bearing a strong resemblance to the low-quality Asti (then called Asti Spumante). It was seen to some degree as poor man’s champagne. It was used by wine educators to demonstrate the quality difference between sparkling wines made in the methode traditionelle and those made by the Charmat method.

But as production and viticultural techniques improved, so did the wines. The bubbles began to get finer and more persistent, and the flavors and aromas developed a subtle complexity. The excessive sugar additions once used to cover up winemaking defects lessened. Now Prosecco has become more than just a component of Bellini cocktails

What is Appassimento? Technique Explained

Appassimento is the process of natural partial dehydration of grapes to produce a greater concentration of colours, aromas and flavours in the wine. Since partially dried grapes also have a higher concentration of sugars, this system is often used to make sweet or very concentrated wines. In the Veneto, where the technique dates back to the times of the Ancient Romans, grape drying is also regularly used for the production of dry wines, leaving them full-bodied, complex and relatively high in alcohol. Entirely made from grapes left to dry for a long period of time, Amarone is the supreme expression of the genre, while Recioto is its traditional sweet counterpart. Grapes are picked a bit later to ensure ripeness – usually in mid-October. Then, they are left all winter to dry into raisins. Amarone grapes (Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella) take a long time to dry out over winter. sourceDuring the roughly 120 days that this occurs, the grapes will lose 30-40% of their weight. The result is intense concentration and a very high sugar content, which in turn translates into 15% or higher alcohol levels. It also demands a premium price… But not our own Appassimento

Luce is a singular and irresistible expression of Montalcino, a Super Tuscan with an exotic side, and above all full of pleasure. The spectacular estate’s diversity of soils, expositions and biodiversity of olive groves and forests come together in a wine as vibrant and exciting as the landscape.

From the beginning, Luce was a bold proposition. The iconic estate located in the hills of southwest Montalcino was originally identified as a great area by the Marchese Vittorio Frescobaldi in the 1960s, and later launched as the Luce partnership between the Marchese and California wine legend Robert Mondavi. The wine was first produced from an outstanding Sangiovese vineyard along with a surprising experimental planting of Merlot from the 1960s done by a French company based in Bordeaux. Combining the roundness and softness of Merlot with the structure and elegance of Sangiovese might seem an obvious idea today, especially after the last 20 years of Super Tuscan history, but this was a first in Montalcino. That blending approach is still followed today, and what is so attractive about the result is, in fact, the character of Montalcino that shines through: the dark fruit, power and structure, the complexity of floral and spice notes, the chewiness of the tannin.

The estate’s iconic name and packaging (Luce translates to “light” in Italian) was inspired by the altar at the Santo Spirito church in Florence – a landmark church built on land donated by the Frescobaldi family during the Renaissance.

“March 19th 2020 was the 25th anniversary of Luce, a relatively young project founded by the Mondavi and Frescobaldi families in Montalcino. Despite the obvious cancellation of the event, the 2017 vintage celebrates this birthday properly. Luce is one of the few Super Tuscans of Montalcino. Compared to Brunello it is blended with Merlot adding suppleness and focused on new oak ageing. Deep crimson in colour, full of clove, vanilla and buttery aromas, than brights for black cherry and plummy notes, graphite and cherry flavour, with an earthy mineral finish. Grainy velvety tannins (impressive for 2017 vintage) and firm acidity are well supported by incredibly rich fruit concentration and suppleness. A wine drinkable now with potential for ageing.

Grape Variety

Merlot – Sangiovese wines are made from two grape varieties extensively grown and widely appreciated in Italy. Sangiovese is internationally renowned for its well-balanced structure and savory flavors. It also happens to be Italy’s most planted grape variety, one that has found considerable success in various New World regions. The ubiquitous Merlot, on the other hand, is a relatively new addition to Italy’s stable of wine grapes, but production volumes have increased exponentially since the 1990s.

The mix is especially noteworthy in Tuscany, where it can be conceptualized as a modern interpretation of the Chianti blend under the Toscana IGT. Sangiovese almost always plays the dominant role in the blend, with Merlot used to soften the wine’s texture and make it more approachable in its youth. Merlot also adds fruitiness and juiciness to the blend, complementing Sangiovese’s more savory and herbaceous qualities.

Because Merlot ripens earlier in the vineyard than Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot – Sangiovese blend is especially suited to inland regions where Cabernet Sauvignon may struggle to achieve optimum maturity. Of course, the addition of Cabernet to this particular blend makes some of Italy’s most famous wines – the so-called Super Tuscans.

The blend has also been successful in California and Australia where a number of approachable and food-friendly wines have been produced.

The Luce estate covers 615 acres, 217 of which are planted with Sangiovese and Merlot. The estate is in the southwest of Montalcino, at one of the highest elevation points, and south/southwest facing; the freshness and structure that result play in tension with the deep, perfectly ripe fruit. Higher elevation planting have sandstone and limestone, and are ideal for Sangiovese. Clay in the lower altitude vineyards is perfect for the powerful expression of Merlot.

skies. The clayey soils of the Merlot vineyards provided the plants with adequate water reserves, which helped reduce any heat-related stresses. Rain showers in mid-September supported a perfect ripening of the grapes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1499707011753{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
