Haut-Batailley Grand Cru Classe (Fifth Growth) A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Merlot, this is a serious effort. Now under the ownership of the Cazes family, this vintage will come with the new label. The nose is beautifully pure and ripe, full of cassis and a touch of eucalyptus, pepper and violet. It is brooding, and there is some depth here. There is quite some structure in the mouth too with grippy tannins, but those will settle nicely by the time this reaches your glass. The palate shows blackcurrant, hedgerow fruit, with great concentration and a beautiful freshness. A strong Haut Batailley in 2017.

Grape Variety

Bordeaux Blend

A Bordeaux Blend is a blended red wine that contains only those varieties that are authorized for use in the red wines of the Bordeaux region of France. Bordeaux is the most famous and highly coveted wine blend in the world. Like many wines with a long history, there’s a lot to learn, so we’re here to just cover the basics.

Red Bordeaux blend is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with smaller portions of Malbec and Petit Verdot.

White Bordeaux blend is primarily made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with a splash of Muscadelle in the mix

While there are both red and white Bordeauxs, the name Bordeaux is primarily associated with the red wine blend. Red Bordeaux is a red wine that is always made from blending Cabernet Sauvignon wine and Merlot wine together, though the proportion of each depends on the location of the winery that made the wine.

Left bank blends : tend to be higher in tannins, alcohol and acidity. They are powerful, rich wines that are said to age a bit better than wines from the Right Bank.

Right bank blends : tend to be softer, less tannic and lower in alcohol and acidity. Because Merlot is the dominant grape, they are much more juicy and usually ready to be drunk much earlier than Left Bank Bordeauxs, and they’re often less expensive.

Pauillac Wine

The deep gravel banks around the town of Pauillac are the heartland of Cabernet Sauvignon, making these both the most revered and the longest lived of Bordeaux’s great wines. For many wine lover, King Cab’s greatest wines are the three Pauillac First Growths (Lafite, Latour and Mouton-Rothschild).

When to drink

These wines definitely need cellaring to allow the powerful and forbidding tannins of youth to mellow and the perfume to emerge. A few examples bloom with friendly fruit from an early age, while others retain the froideur of an assiduous school prefect throughout their long lives. Eight to ten years will be enough to bring most wines to a peak and the should drink well for another decade thereafter, perhaps two decades for the best wines.

Best Vintages of Pomerol : 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1996, 1995, 1990

The hallmark flavours of a classic Pauillac are an intense blackcurrant fruit flavour allied to a heady cedarwood and pencil-shaving perfume. Simple to describe yet compelling and infinitely satisfying in the glass. A few properties produce a broader, plummier style but austerity is the watchword for the majority.

Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy’s Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_text_separator title=”Pauillac”][vc_column_text]Pauillac – Pauillac is probably the most famous village in Bordeaux. Located between St. Julien and St. Estephe, it has more of the top ranked chateau than the other four appellations of the Haut Medoc. This area has three of the five premier cru classe wineries: Lafite Rothschild, Latour, and Mouton Rothschild. There are two of the top second-growths (Pichon Lalande and Pichon Baron) as well as several outstanding fourth and fifth-growth chateaux including Lynch Bages. Because of the gravely soils and great drainage, Pauillac has the ideal conditions to grow great Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines from this village are some of the longest-lived in Bordeaux.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Margaux Wine

Margaux’s fame relies on its light and divinely perfumed wines. But consistency has never been Margaux’s strong point, as the vineyards sprawl more widely than those of the other Haut-Medoc communes and over more diverse soils. The best wines hail from the gravel banks that weave through the appellation. The southernmost vineyards produce a rounder but still perfumed style.

Margaux and Cantenac, the village just south of it are considered to make the Medoc’s most polished and fragrant wine. Their historical record says so; and contemporary reality is slowly catching up. There are more second and third growths here than anywhere and a new broom has been sweeping through the southern Medoc.

Good Margaux beckons with seductive fragrance enriching the Medoc’s trademark blackcurrant and cedarwood perfume with violets and rose petals, roasted nuts and vanilla, plums and hedgerow berries, The body is certainly lighter and more supple than in wines from the communes to the north, yet by no means wanting for intensity or substance.

St. Estephe Wine

Saint Estephe is somewhat burdened by its reputation as the slowest to mature, toughest and most tannin of all Medoc wines. But the wines are honest reliable and fair value. Growers are introducing more Merlot in the vineyard to cope with conditions that are a little cooler than in the other more southerly Medoc communes and soils that are decidedly more clogged with clay.

When to drink

Generally good Saint Estephe is best enjoyed between 10 and 20 years of age although broader Merlot rich wines should open up nicely after six years. Don’t expect wine from a leading property to be ready before 10 years.

These are the brawniest wines of the Haut-Medoc and the tannins will always give an earthy scratch to the texture, no matter how refined the estate know how well matured the wine might be Blackcurrant and cedarwood fruit peek out with age but never with the brazen beauty of a Pauillac or a St.Julien. Overall the wines are a bit suppler than of yore, muscular where they were once merely rigid and offer a welcome flutter of alluring fruit to offset all that suare jawed integrity.

The 2018 Grand-Puy-Ducasse is deep garnet-purple in color and has quite a lot of cedar/oak on the nose to begin, opening out to a core of warm black and red currants, stewed plums and mulberries with touches of pencil shavings, fried herbs, lavender and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, the palate gives a firm, grainy frame with some chew from the oak and fresh, crunchy red and black fruit, finishing savory.

The wines from this village are some of the longest-lived in Bordeaux.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Haut-Batailley Grand Cru Classe (Fifth Growth) The Cazes family bought this estate in Spring 2017 and have been responsible for the ageing of this wine, but not its production. This wasn't released en primeur due to the timing of the sale. This is a good quality Pauillac, still very much in the primeur register but now with an appealing openness to the structure that suggests it won't take as long to come into its drinking window as some. Sweet black fruits are joined by gentle, well-worked tannins and a nice freshness. It has an enjoyable, silky texture.

The blackcurrants and blueberries with violets on the nose are fascinating. Full-bodied and very tightly wound with gorgeous tannins and a linear and bright finish. Needs two to four years to come together. Try after 2023.

The 2016 Haut-Batailley was tasted from two bottles, the first showing a touch of TCA. The second has an airy and well-defined bouquet of blackberry, graphite and subtle floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and very classic in style, displaying impressive grip. I appreciate the substance toward the finish, and the pencil lead lingering on the aftertaste. This is an outstanding Haut-Batailley.

Pontet Canet Grand Cru Classe (Fifth Growth) Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Pontet-Canet comes charging out of the glass with fantastically expressive notes of black cherry preserves, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles plus touches of kirsch, wilted roses, tobacco, camphor and cinnamon stick with a waft of fragrant soil. Full bodied, the palate is laden with black and red fruit layers, supported by very firm, very finely grained tannins and provocative freshness, finishing with incredible length and stunningly perfumed.

Succulent fruits, rich tannins and juicy acidity are in perfect harmony in this wine produced from biodynamic grapes. It has a rich, velvet texture and dense structure, sumptuous and already balanced and delicious. However do not be fooled, this is a serious wine for aging. Drink no earlier than 2026.
