A Bordeaux Blend is a blended red wine that contains only those varieties that are authorized for use in the red wines of the Bordeaux region of France.  Bordeaux is the most famous and highly coveted wine blend in the world. Like many wines with a long history, there’s a lot to learn, so we’re here to just cover the basics.

• Red Bordeaux blend is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with smaller portions of Malbec and Petit Verdot.
• White Bordeaux blend is primarily made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with a splash of Muscadelle in the mix

While there are both red and white Bordeauxs, the name Bordeaux is primarily associated with the red wine blend. Red Bordeaux is a red wine that is always made from blending Cabernet Sauvignon wine and Merlot wine together, though the proportion of each depends on the location of the winery that made the wine.

• Left bank blends : tend to be higher in tannins, alcohol and acidity. They are powerful, rich wines that are said to age a bit better than wines from the Right Bank.
• Right bank blends : tend to be softer, less tannic and lower in alcohol and acidity. Because Merlot is the dominant grape, they are much more juicy and usually ready to be drunk much earlier than Left Bank Bordeauxs, and they’re often less expensive.

Pauillac Wine

The deep gravel banks around the town of Pauillac are the heartland of Cabernet Sauvignon, making these both the most revered and the longest lived of Bordeaux’s great wines.  For many wine lover, King Cab’s greatest wines are the three Pauillac First Growths (Lafite, Latour and Mouton-Rothschild).

When to drink

These wines definitely need cellaring to allow the powerful and forbidding tannins of youth to mellow and the perfume to emerge.  A few examples bloom with friendly fruit from an early age, while others retain the froideur of an assiduous school prefect throughout their long lives.  Eight to ten years will be enough to bring most wines to a peak and the should drink well for another decade thereafter, perhaps two decades for the best wines.

Graves & Pessac-Leognan Wine

The Graves is the original home of red Bordeaux wine, renowned long before the marshlands to the north of the city had been drained to create the vineyards of the Medoc. Its secret is as the name suggests, the gravelly vineyards that lie in the northern part of the region which have been hived off since 1984 to form the Passac-Leognan appellation.

When to drink

Even serious wines are approachable fairly young-say from four or five years old as the tend to be lighter and more supple than Medoc reds, with a significant proportion of Merlot in the blend. The keep on going for 10,20,even 30 years after the vintage.

These wines stand out from their Medoc counterparts from the moment you encounter the rich, earthy scent redolent of tobacco. Within the blackcurrant and plum fruit and creamy layers of flavour you’ll find firm mineral nuances and an appealing core of baked earth, a robust reminder that even in its loftiest incarnations wine is a product of soil and sweat. But the Graves is also about juicy, drink-me reds, delivering upfront plummy fruit with a touch of oak spice and a dusting of that appetizing dry earthness.

This shows lots of opulent aromas of ripe fruit, light toasted oak, walnut and dried meat. It’s full-bodied, with chewy tannins and plenty of fruit. A muscular, solid wine. Baby 1986. Try in 2020.

This delivers a gorgeously pure beam of cassis and cherry compote, with singed apple wood, graphite and iron notes hanging in the background for now. Long and polished through the finish, showing serious depth in reserve. Best from 2018 through 2035.

There is a lightness about this vintage of Mouton Rothschild. It doesn’t take away from its quality but does give the wine poise and an attractive lift. The wine is based on solid tannins, then the ripe fruit builds layers of fruitiness and freshness. It is not likely to be one of the longest-aging Moutons, but it will be delicious. Drink from 2020.

Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2011 Mouton-Rothschild is probably the “weakest” of the releases between 2008 and 2012, although that would be unfairly disparaging what is a perfectly respectable, if rather unexciting Mouton. Here, it has those graphite and cedar aromas present and correct, the former a little more accentuated and with a light sea-spray note emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with cedar and a slight peat-like note infusing the black fruit, rigid in its youth but nicely delineated. As I discerned out of barrel, what it lacks is that peacock’s tail on the finish, bolting out of the exit door before you have really got to know each other. Tasted April 2016.

Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy’s Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. A warm and delicious Mouton with light spice, currant, and hints of chocolate. Very subtle and refined. Full to medium body. Seamless tannins that dissolve on the finish. Wonderful length for the vintage. 89% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, and 4% cabernet franc. Salty and delicately fruity. Better in 2020 but beautiful now.

The 2013 Mouton Rothschild is the best of the Medoc first-growths in this vintage. It was the smallest crop at Mouton since 1969, even smaller than their 1991. Only 45% of the crop made it into the final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. One of the few 2013s to reveal serious depth, it displays a dense saturated ruby/purple color along with spicy creme de cassis, licorice and forest floor characteristics. Elegant, medium-bodied and more concentrated than most of its peers, it even reveals some tannins, suggesting 2-5 years of bottle age may be needed. It should last for 15-20 years.
