Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Talbot is just a little reduced to begin, opening out to reveal notions of warm red and black currants, baked plums and mulberries with touches of sautéed herbs, tilled soil, fallen leaves and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, it has commendably ripe, fine-grained tannins and restrained, earthy layers on offer in the mouth with an herbal lift on the finish.

St.Julien Wine

It’s all about balance a perfect balance between substance and delicacy, opulence and austerity between the necessary brashness of youth and the lean-limbed genius of maturity. St-Julien is the smallest of the Haut-Medoc communal appellations but with the greatest concentration of top-class gravelly vineyard land.

When to drink

St.Julien’s charm is in part due to softer-edged tannins than Pauillac and most wines are enjoyable from six years of age up to 10 or 15. But wait until 10 years to experience the full harmony of the blackcurrant and cedar in the best wines, which should stay at their peak for easily another decade.

A restrained cedarwood perfume and lean but mouthwatering blackcurrant fruit set St.Julien somewhere between the gravitas of Pauillac and the airier charms of Margaux. These wines are satisfyingly rich and rounded, with perhaps a dose of cherries swirled deep into the fruit perhaps a scoop of chocolate hinting at a hedonistic heart beating somewhere behind the Saville Row formality of the tannins.

The best vintage of this wine since 2009! Effusive, fresh redcurrant and cassis aromas give this St.-Julien terrific drive and energy, the elegant, dry tannins beautifully married to the medium body, right through the long, agile finish. Drink or hold.

Gorgeous floral aromatics, so perfumed and pretty, really leaping out the glass with an amazingly vibrant pink/purple colour too. Such an excellent delivery of flavour on the palate, you have shiny, bright fruit and well-expressed terroir with smooth and supportive tannins. It shows the heat of the vintage in the density and deep core of spice-edged red and black fruit but also has a juicy, bright acidity that underpins the fruit and keeps things refreshing. Full of elegance, precision and confidence – all the elements in harmony with consistency and persistence. A wonderful wine.

The 2019 Giscours has turned out very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, burning embers, lilac and violets framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it’s polished and perfumed, with a velvety, seamless profile and bright animating acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Alexandre Van Beek and his team are taking this estate to heights it hasn’t hit since the 1970s, and this is another of the great bargains of the 2019 en primeur campaign.

Margaux’s fame relies on its light and divinely perfumed wines. But consistency has never been Margaux’s strong point, as the vineyards sprawl more widely than those of the other Haut-Medoc communes and over more diverse soils. The best wines hail from the gravel banks that weave through the appellation. The southernmost vineyards produce a rounder but still perfumed style.

Margaux and Cantenac, the village just south of it are considered to make the Medoc’s most polished and fragrant wine. Their historical record says so; and contemporary reality is slowly catching up. There are more second and third growths here than anywhere and a new broom has been sweeping through the southern Medoc.

The 2019 Prieuré-Lichine soars from the glass, showing tremendous aromatic depth and tons of pure drive. Silky and plush on the palate, the 2019 has so much going on. Super-ripe red cherry, red plum, blood orange, mint, wild flowers and sweet spice give this racy Margaux tons of class. As good as the 2019 is today, my impression is that there is more wine than I am seeing from these barrel samples. Tasted two times.

Bordeaux Blend

A Bordeaux Blend is a blended red wine that contains only those varieties that are authorized for use in the red wines of the Bordeaux region of France. Bordeaux is the most famous and highly coveted wine blend in the world. Like many wines with a long history, there’s a lot to learn, so we’re here to just cover the basics.

Red Bordeaux blend is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with smaller portions of Malbec and Petit Verdot.

White Bordeaux blend is primarily made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with a splash of Muscadelle in the mix

While there are both red and white Bordeauxs, the name Bordeaux is primarily associated with the red wine blend. Red Bordeaux is a red wine that is always made from blending Cabernet Sauvignon wine and Merlot wine together, though the proportion of each depends on the location of the winery that made the wine.

Grape Variety

Left bank blends : tend to be higher in tannins, alcohol and acidity. They are powerful, rich wines that are said to age a bit better than wines from the Right Bank.

Right bank blends : tend to be softer, less tannic and lower in alcohol and acidity. Because Merlot is the dominant grape, they are much more juicy and usually ready to be drunk much earlier than Left Bank Bordeauxs, and they’re often less expensive.
