Grape Variety

Bordeaux Blend

A Bordeaux Blend is a blended red wine that contains only those varieties that are authorized for use in the red wines of the Bordeaux region of France. Bordeaux is the most famous and highly coveted wine blend in the world. Like many wines with a long history, there’s a lot to learn, so we’re here to just cover the basics.

Red Bordeaux blend is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with smaller portions of Malbec and Petit Verdot.

White Bordeaux blend is primarily made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with a splash of Muscadelle in the mix

While there are both red and white Bordeauxs, the name Bordeaux is primarily associated with the red wine blend. Red Bordeaux is a red wine that is always made from blending Cabernet Sauvignon wine and Merlot wine together, though the proportion of each depends on the location of the winery that made the wine.

Left bank blends : tend to be higher in tannins, alcohol and acidity. They are powerful, rich wines that are said to age a bit better than wines from the Right Bank.

Right bank blends : tend to be softer, less tannic and lower in alcohol and acidity. Because Merlot is the dominant grape, they are much more juicy and usually ready to be drunk much earlier than Left Bank Bordeauxs, and they’re often less expensive.

St-Emilion

St-Emilion is a region of smallholdings. The co-operative is of great importance and vinifies over 20% of entire crop to a consistently pretty high standard. Merlot is the dominant grape in the clay-rich soils with significant plantings of Cabernet Franc on limestone lending support.

The grapes of St-Emilion are the plump Merlot and the Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon can have problems ripening in this climate less tempered by the ocean especially in its damper cooler soils

When to drink – Straightforward St-Emilion is enjoyable from the word go and even ambitious wines are bursting with fruity richness from around four years of age. Don’t plan to keep too many bottles beyond their tenth birthday although the best wines from the limestone slopes around the town of St-Emilion itself have more structure and longevity.

Best Vintages of St-Emilion : 2016, 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1990, 1989, 1985, 1964, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1953, 1950, 1949, 1947 and 1945.

89 points Decanter
If you enjoy a glass of claret but don’t have the patience to lay it down, this St-Emilion from 2007 could be a good bet. New to Majestic, it provides a taste of mature Bordeaux, since 2007 was a relatively light vintage. The Cap de Mourlin family has owned this grand cru estate for 400 years. The Merlot-dominant blend for this wine includes 25% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and spent 18 months in oak barrels, 50% new. It displays the savouriness and secondary characteristics that you’d expect from a Bordeaux with this age on it, some spice from the oak ageing, and black berry fruit. Immediate drinking pleasure.

The 2017 Larcis Ducasse is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Pliant and deep, with terrific fruit purity, Larcis possesses striking fruit purity and tons of resonance. Red cherry, blood orange, pomegranate, mint, spice, licorice and mocha infuse the 2017 with striking complexity as well as nuance. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. Larcis is never one of the most obvious wines in Saint-Émilion, but it is often among the most regal. Best of all, Larcis remains one of the best values anywhere in the world.

Winemaker Notes

Rich in anthocyanins and has velvety and finely extracted tannins. There is a freshness on the palate and perfect balance. The wines are very aromatic, with notes of red berries, menthol and liquorice, and a marked mineral character. A long finish, fruity and fresh.

The 2014 Faugeres still has bundles of red plum and juniper berry on the nose, if anything even more generous than when I tasted it a few months ago. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, superb structure and well judged acidity. It merges with more black fruit towards the finish and has palpable energy on the finish—still excellent.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]

What a contrast with the stern demanding wines of the Medoc ! A glass of St-Emilion melts with gorgeous softness a buttery toffeeish sweetness and a fruit flavor sticky with dark chewy richness of raisins and cherries in a fruit cake.

This wine shows a medium dark red in colour and is marked by its’ beautiful and intense Cabernet character, with fresh and lush rich notes of black plums and rich notes of black figs, raspberries, figs and fine leather, with hints of ginger and spice and soft vanillary new oak.

On the palate it is full bodied with firm but carefully weighted tannins on the entry, which become more defined as the wine lingers in the mouth, with dense savoury and earthy characters leading towards a supple, blackberry and plum finish that displays good restraint and poise.

It is a delicious and pleasing wine with a firm satisfying freshness, quite forward in style, but with fine soft tannins and an easy aromatic evolution that spreads neatly right across the palate. It will drink well after only 2 or 3 years, but will also continue to develop nicely in the bottle.

Drink 2020 to 2028.

Château Teyssier rests in one of the most privileged terroirs of Bordeaux and without a doubt one of the most acclaimed wine regions in the entire world. This Château is right in the heart of Saint-Emilion Grand Cru and just over 3 miles from the famous Saint-Emilion's First Classified Château Angelus, a wine that can be found at more than $300/bottle (depending on the vintage.)

Nonetheless, Château Teyssier is much more than a privileged terroir. This estate is one of the oldest and most prosperous Châteaux in the area dating back to the 18th century; and in fact, in the 19th century, it was the largest wine producer on the Right Bank.

Jonathan Maltus a.k.a “the cult winemaker” is the owner and mastermind behind Château Teyssier. Jonathan is a Rockstar in the wine industry, who also produces high-end, award-winning wines like Chateau Le Dome (compare at $200/btl), Le Carre, Les Asteries, and Vieux Chateau Mazerat in Bordeaux, as well as Worlds End in Napa Valley. But geniuses don't work alone, Jonathan has as his right-hand man, and wine consultant, none other than Gilles Pauquet, Château Cheval Blanc's former winemaker.

Everything in Château Teyssier screams greatness. The vineyard is made up of more than 120 acres, which are mostly planted with the queen grapes of the Right Bank, Merlot, and Cab Franc. And since the year 2000, the vinification area and cellar have been renovated and modernized with state-of-the-art technology and managed with the highest quality standards.

2018 was an outstanding year for Saint-Emilión. Vinous Media blessed this vintage with a 96-point review, stating that “The 2018 Right Bank wines are opulent, flamboyant reds. It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic.”
