Red Bordeaux blend is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with smaller portions of Malbec and Petit Verdot.

White Bordeaux blend is primarily made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with a splash of Muscadelle in the mix

While there are both red and white Bordeauxs, the name Bordeaux is primarily associated with the red wine blend. Red Bordeaux is a red wine that is always made from blending Cabernet Sauvignon wine and Merlot wine together, though the proportion of each depends on the location of the winery that made the wine.

Left bank blends : tend to be higher in tannins, alcohol and acidity. They are powerful, rich wines that are said to age a bit better than wines from the Right Bank.

Right bank blends : tend to be softer, less tannic and lower in alcohol and acidity. Because Merlot is the dominant grape, they are much more juicy and usually ready to be drunk much earlier than Left Bank Bordeauxs, and they’re often less expensive.

93 points Decanter
Another strong wine in the Calon-Ségur stable this year, showing depth and clarity of flavour. No getting around the concentration in the tannins, well balanced by brambled berry fruits and the St-Estèphe feeling of confident power. After an extremely dry July, here they saw 45mm of rain in three days in August, followed by another stretch of no rain from 15 August to 21st September. Helps explain the low 33hl/ha yields. 30% new barrels. 3.7pH.

94 points Jeb Dunnuck

The northern Medoc did beautifully in this vintage. And the second wine from Château Calon Segur, the 2020 Le Marquis De Calon Ségur, looks to be terrific. Offering a great nose of damp earth, violets, cassis, and more blue-tinged fruits, it’s medium to full-bodied and has a ripe, polished, seamless texture, notable tannins, and a great finish. It’s everything you would want from a second wine and is ideal for drinking over the coming 10-15 years.

St. Estephe Wine

Saint Estephe is somewhat burdened by its reputation as the slowest to mature, toughest and most tannin of all Medoc wines. But the wines are honest reliable and fair value. Growers are introducing more Merlot in the vineyard to cope with conditions that are a little cooler than in the other more southerly Medoc communes and soils that are decidedly more clogged with clay.

When to drink

Generally good Saint Estephe is best enjoyed between 10 and 20 years of age although broader Merlot rich wines should open up nicely after six years. Don’t expect wine from a leading property to be ready before 10 years.

These are the brawniest wines of the Haut-Medoc and the tannins will always give an earthy scratch to the texture, no matter how refined the estate know how well matured the wine might be Blackcurrant and cedarwood fruit peek out with age but never with the brazen beauty of a Pauillac or a St.Julien. Overall the wines are a bit suppler than of yore, muscular where they were once merely rigid and offer a welcome flutter of alluring fruit to offset all that suare jawed integrity.

A dense and deep colour, the wine has an intense and complex, slightly saline nose which reveals notes of blackcurrant and very ripe fruit with airing. From a powerful attack on highly refined, velvet tannins, the smooth and dense mid-palate offers attractive and expressive flavours, leading into a long and elegant finish. An incredibly precise wine, it sets a benchmark for Château Montrose.

97 points Decanter
Another contender for wine of the vintage. Here things get a little deep and fleshy, with crushed damson fruit that holds its integrity. Tannins are big and bold, oak influence clear but not offputting, just giving boots to slip your feet into. Your mouth responds to these tannins, reminds you that wine tasting us a physical activity. Great quality, what a brilliant wine.

Generally good Saint Estephe is best enjoyed between 10 and 20 years of age although broader Merlot rich wines should open up nicely after six years. Don’t expect wine from a leading property to be ready before 10 years.

“This spicy wine shows how far the estate has moved from its over-use of new wood. In this bottling, the wood is subtle and doesn’t mask the rich fruit and the juicy acidity. “I was able to taste the 2015 Phelan Segur on multiple occasion and it showed beautifully both times. Black currants, scorched earth, espresso and hints of chocolate all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, concentrated, firm, structured, dense Saint-Estèphe. It needs 3-4 years of bottle age but will see its 20th birthday in fine form. “

“Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Phélan Ségur has a nose of red and black currants with earthy notes of fungi, dried herbs, damp soil and tapenade. The palate is medium-bodied with a good fruit core, firm and chewy tannins and nice freshness.”

90 points Decanter
“Has the smooth, slightly gamey fruit you’d expect from Phélan-Ségur. Very good vineyard expression and fine, elegant length.”
