Pape Clement (Grand Cru Classe de Graves) Coming from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Château Pape Clement from Bernard Magrez is a gorgeous wine that's performing even better from bottle than barrel, which is always a good sign. Deep ruby/purple, with stunning crème de cassis and blackberry fruits as well as kaleidoscope-like notes of graphite, scorched earth, smoke, violets, and spring flowers, it offers full-bodied richness yet stays light on its feet, graceful, and almost ethereal on the palate, with integrated acidity and building yet seamless tannin's. The Cabernet Sauvignon really sings at this point, and there's almost a Médoc-like regalness here. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant 2005 (it also has similarities to the 2016), it will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for 30+ years.

Graves & Pessac-Leognan Wine

The Graves is the original home of red Bordeaux wine, renowned long before the marshlands to the north of the city had been drained to create the vineyards of the Medoc. Its secret is as the name suggests, the gravelly vineyards that lie in the northern part of the region which have been hived off since 1984 to form the Passac-Leognan appellation.

When to drink

Even serious wines are approachable fairly young-say from four or five years old as the tend to be lighter and more supple than Medoc reds, with a significant proportion of Merlot in the blend. The keep on going for 10,20,even 30 years after the vintage.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1518860229697{background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column_text]Graves & Pessac-Leognan Red Wine Style

These wines stand out from their Medoc counterparts from the moment you encounter the rich, earthy scent redolent of tobacco. Within the blackcurrant and plum fruit and creamy layers of flavour you’ll find firm mineral nuances and an appealing core of baked earth, a robust reminder that even in its loftiest incarnations wine is a product of soil and sweat. But the Graves is also about juicy, drink-me reds, delivering upfront plummy fruit with a touch of oak spice and a dusting of that appetizing dry earthness.

More Information

If you’ve enjoyed our past offerings of richer-style complex Italian Reds such as Amaranta and Masso Antico then you really need to look at this. We’ve recently acquired a small allocation of the 2020 Cielo e Terra 3 Passo Vino Rosso . This Venetian Blend is predominantly Negroamaro with Sangiovese and it has rocked the socks off Italy’s most well-known wine writer Luca Maroni:

”Here we are at the absolute top of value, in particular as regards to concentration. Among the best reds of the year, chapeau.” 98 Points, Luca Maroni, Annual Italian Wine Guide

But I should also add this is not some kind of one-off fluke, the previous vintages of this wine has won many golds medals and wine scribes have also sung it’s praises. Basically, we have been itching ourselves wanting to sell this wine to you and finally we have enough stocks of this wine to last, well maybe a day!

The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with muscular black fruits, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long and mineral laced.

The best vintage of this wine since 2009! Effusive, fresh redcurrant and cassis aromas give this St.-Julien terrific drive and energy, the elegant, dry tannins beautifully married to the medium body, right through the long, agile finish. Drink or hold.

Grape Variety

Bordeaux Blend

A Bordeaux Blend is a blended red wine that contains only those varieties that are authorized for use in the red wines of the Bordeaux region of France. Bordeaux is the most famous and highly coveted wine blend in the world. Like many wines with a long history, there’s a lot to learn, so we’re here to just cover the basics.

Red Bordeaux blend is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with smaller portions of Malbec and Petit Verdot.

White Bordeaux blend is primarily made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with a splash of Muscadelle in the mix

While there are both red and white Bordeauxs, the name Bordeaux is primarily associated with the red wine blend. Red Bordeaux is a red wine that is always made from blending Cabernet Sauvignon wine and Merlot wine together, though the proportion of each depends on the location of the winery that made the wine.

Left bank blends : tend to be higher in tannins, alcohol and acidity. They are powerful, rich wines that are said to age a bit better than wines from the Right Bank.

Right bank blends : tend to be softer, less tannic and lower in alcohol and acidity. Because Merlot is the dominant grape, they are much more juicy and usually ready to be drunk much earlier than Left Bank Bordeauxs, and they’re often less expensive.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]

St.Julien Wine

It’s all about balance a perfect balance between substance and delicacy, opulence and austerity between the necessary brashness of youth and the lean-limbed genius of maturity. St-Julien is the smallest of the Haut-Medoc communal appellations but with the greatest concentration of top-class gravelly vineyard land.

When to drink

St.Julien’s charm is in part due to softer-edged tannins than Pauillac and most wines are enjoyable from six years of age up to 10 or 15. But wait until 10 years to experience the full harmony of the blackcurrant and cedar in the best wines, which should stay at their peak for easily another decade.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1518860229697{background-color: #f2f2f2 !important;}”][vc_column_text]St.Julien Wine Style

A restrained cedarwood perfume and lean but mouthwatering blackcurrant fruit set St.Julien somewhere between the gravitas of Pauillac and the airier charms of Margaux. These wines are satisfyingly rich and rounded, with perhaps a dose of cherries swirled deep into the fruit perhaps a scoop of chocolate hinting at a hedonistic heart beating somewhere behind the Saville Row formality of the tannins.

Tiny Pomerol is possibly the most famous of all Bordeaux’s appellations and it’s hedonistic wines command a high price. Merlot dominates the vineyard to the virtual exclusion of other varieties relishing Pomerol’s special clay soils to produce superb inimitable wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon, whose wine has to live through a tannic youth. In Pomerol it is Merlot secondary in the Medoc, that is the leading vine. Great growths have about 70-80% Merlot with perhaps 20% Cabernet Franc known here as Bouchet. The greatest Pomerol, Petrus is almost exclusively Merlot growing in almost pure clay – with astonishing results.

Even the best Pomerol has produced all it’s perfume and achieved it’s dazzling finesse within a dozen years or so and many are already attractive at five years old.

When to drink – You can enjoy the headlong rush of fruit when the wine is very young – the tannins tend to be supple enough not to spoil the party – but it’s worth holding on for five years, ten for a top bottle before abandoning yourself to the carnival whirl of flavours. Only really special wines stay the course beyond 15 years.

It’s richer than any dry red wine has a right to be sometimes buttery, sometimes creamy with honeyed spices too. Often the fruit is plummy but there’s blackcurrant in there too along with raisins, chocolate, roasted nuts and the disturbing perfume of truffles with mint to freshen it up.

Château Séraphine was named as one of only five Bordeaux Properties in Wine Advocate's 'Top 100 wine discoveries of 2020'

In 2016, the Krajewski family, proprietors of nearby Clos Cantenac in Saint-Emilion, acquired the vines and buildings of two Pomerol estates, Chateau Monbrun and Clos Picassou. The father-daughter team, Martin and Charlotte Krajewski, quickly recognized that property for sale isn’t something that happens a lot in Pomerol and that this was a rare opportunity they needed to make happen! The following year the merged properties were renamed Chateau ‘Séraphine’ after Martin’s grandmother. The name Séraphine was chosen not only as ‘homage’ to his Polish farming heritage, but also with great respect for Pomerol’s rich history and traditions.

Chateau Saint Jacques is a very nice estate belonging to Pelotier family for several generation, located in Libourne. The wine is mostly made of merlot, which gives this Pomerol a supple and silky tannic structure, very agreeable with grilled red meats.

Winemaker Notes

Traditionnal vinification in thermoregulated vats. Ageing during in 50% of new oak.

Tasting Notes: Powerful and seductive with dark, ruby color and aromas of berry fruit, earth, spices, herbs, and vanilla. A powerful, meaty, and very tasty wine with a good struc-ture, good balance, and elegant tannins from the 12-month barrel aging. The lingering finish is velvety and shows fruit and vanilla tones. This wine is already pleasant to drink but patience will be rewarded.
The wine will get softer with age by ripening.

It reveals notes of juicy blackberry, small bright black fruits, small notes of juicy blueberry associated with touches of crushed strawberry, Sichuan pepper, a racy minerality/incense, cocoa as well as fine hints of flowers and a discreet hint of vanilla. The palate is fruity, slightly tight and offers minerality, a beautiful freshness, a good definition, gourmandize as well as tension, a small concentration, precision, a bright/fresh fruit, a fine straightness, energy and a fine grain. On the palate this wine expresses notes of juicy/fleshy blackberry, pulpy/acidulous cassis, small notes of fresh/acidulous blueberry associated with touches of small juicy/ripe red berries, violet, dark chocolate as well as fine hints of camphir, crushed almond, toasted, a subtle hint of hazelnut and incense. A very discreet hint of toasted/caramelized oak and bitterness of the cocoa on the finish/persistence. Good length. A wine finely tight right now but will open with time.

Almost entirely Merlot, this wine is rich but has good balance because of acidity that lightens the dense fruits and tannins. Dark plum flavors and the bold structure will take time to soften. Drink from 2025.

Winemaker Notes

Nice fruit forward Pomerol with loads of Merlot fruit and a delightful perfumed element to it. A rich & powerful wine with good balance with a bouquet of black current, mint and pretty earthy tones. It comes from a highly respected small seven-acre vineyard located in the heart of Pomerol. This wine is always a crowd pleaser and great for this price range.

Great with a wide range of dishes including lamb chops, roasts and chicken.
